Look: Stila Does Neutrals

This look begins a week of softer, more neutral shades for the eyes. So if neutral colors are for you, stay tuned, because I have some more coming your way (well, they’re definitely neutral and more natural for me!). For this look, I tried out using Strayin’ lipstick from the HK collection. I put some Nice Kitty lipglass over it and it was like HELLOOOOO LIPS! Too bright. So I wiped it off and just went with Nice Kitty straight up. I thought it looked better. I’m including both sets of pictures anyway.

Other

Look: Jazz Kitchen Teals

This is the glamorous look I wore out to the Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney. We went with my friends Ruth and Leslie and their respective others. It was a really fun night with a live Jazz band in the room we were eating. Toward the end of our dinner, one of the waitresses approached me and asked me to close my eyes so she could see my makeup completely. Of course I was flattered! She said her daughter wants to get into it, so I gave her my card. This is a shout out to her!

Look: Green Shirt

I couldn’t come up with anything more clever than green shirt for this look. It matches my favorite green sweater that I’ll be wearing again in another month for St. Patty’s Day. Unless it’s hot…then I’ll have to go to plan B! I used a NARS shadow for the middle lid because the MAC ones just weren’t looking bright enough.

Look: Striped Shirt with Purples

Mission: to match my blue and purple shiny striped shirt. It was striped shirt day at school. I decided to go to my PRO palette with colors only found at the MAC PRO stores. I like the different types of purples. Mission? Accomplished!

Look: Hello Kitty Stylin’

This is one of the looks from Hello Kitty called Stylin’. I used a few different colors than they have, but it turned out alright I think. It’s definitely different, and that’s good. I rarely venture from my standard looks, so it’s fun to work outside the box once in a while – keeps things interesting!

For this look I used:

  • Eyes: UDPPS (primer), Painterly PP (base), Creme Royal + Blanc Type (middle lid), Stylin’ (outer & inner lid), Rite of Spring (highlight), Feline Kohl Power (upper lashline & waterline), UD 24/7 Ransom (lower lashline), Chanel Exceptionnel mascara
  • Cheeks: Tippy Beauty Powder Blush
  • Lips: Chanel Mica lipstick + Touchpoint 3D lipgloss

On a side note…I must vent a little. While I was working the Hello Kitty event, one of the other MA’s had this look on. A customer sits down in my chair and tells me she wants “eyes like hers” but with hot pink instead of purple. Ummmm…ok, so have you ever been driving with a friend and they tell you to turn left even though you’re SURE it’s to the right, but for some reason you turn left anyway?! So I did what she asked for, and like I knew it would, it looked sorta horrible. It’s not her fault – I knew it wasn’t going to look right, but I did it anyway since she asked for it. I should have told her, um no honey, that’s gonna look like a swollen eye! Ah well. We wiped it off, and started over. Live and learn…I learned my lesson well!

Collection: Don’t Brush It Off

BRUSHES! Your makeup is utterly useless without them. They are the tools of the trade. If you want beautiful makeup, you have to invest in some good brushes.

brush-belt

Here’s my brush belt. Most of them are MAC brushes, but I have a few Lorac and Chanel ones as well. No, I do not use ALL of them every single day. I did some close-ups of my frequently used brushes (Read more to see pictures!).

Basic rules for brushes:

  • Clean them often. At least once a week for ones used daily. If you use them with creamy cosmetics, then use one side one day, another side the next day, and then clean it. I use generic baby shampoo to clean mine.
  • Dense bristles pick up more color. The more dense the brush, the better it picks up color, thus the heavier the application. It’s not always important how soft it is or whether it’s natural hair or synthetic.
  • Hold the handle. Depending on where you hold your brush, you’ll have a heavy hand or a light one. Hold the brush closer to the brush head, and you will apply heavier color. Hold it near the end, and you can put on a lighter, more whispy wash of color.
  • There’s no right way to use a brush. No matter what the MA tells you s/he uses a particular brush for, that’s not the only way to use it. Also, just because it’s labeled as a powder brush doesn’t mean you can’t use  it for foundation or cream blush etc.
  • All brushes are not created equal. Sometimes, you get what you pay for. Getting some good ones is a wise investment.
  • Different brushes do different things. Though it’s not impossible, it would be extremely difficult to recreate any of my looks using only one or two brushes. It would be like trying to cook a gourmet dinner with only one pot or one pan.

Any other questions about brushes? Let me know – I’d be happy to answer!

Look: Working for MAC – Day 1 Hello Kitty Stately Black

Working for the MAC event was a trip. It was some of the hardest work I’ve ever done…probably because most of it was not intellecutal like I’m used to. I was more walking around and standing around etc. I’ve already posted about my first day there, and the other two days were similar (probably a little worse though). Well when you work there for events, they each do one of the “looks” from MAC that incorporates the new stuff. I modified the look just slightly because *gasp* I didn’t have every single thing. I did the Stately Black look from Wild Kitty. We also had to tie some ribbons in our hair. Gotta love those fake lashes :-)

  • Cheeks: Tippy Beauty Powder Blush
  • Lips: Chanel Pink Praline lipliner, Fashion Mews lipstick, Pretty Plush Plushglass

What surprised me most about this look was the lips! I was sure Fashion Mews was going to turn out hideous on me, but go figure, I really really liked it!!  See lots more pictures!  Read the rest of this entry »

Look: Go Bruins!

This look was actually done to match my Edison Middle School staff shirt (which are bright shades of blue and yellow), but the blue and *gold* actually make me think of my UCLA Bruins, so I called it a Go Bruins! look.
